A father of three on Saturday rescued his family from fire that caught his one bed-roomed grass-thatched house in Pensulo village in Blantyre.

In an interview, Hassan Chaponda said he noticed the fire that caught the roof of the house around 2 am and he woke up his wife, and together, they managed to evacuate their three children aged two, four and seven.

The fire went on and burnt down the whole roof woodwork and property in the house that included four bags of maize, according to Chaponda.

Chaponda said: “Of all the property, we only managed to rescue four bags of maize out of eight. But everything, including all our clothes, got burnt. People have actually borrowed us clothes.”

The family suspects no foul play and had no idea what caused the fire. The wife explained that that day she never made any fire around as they had travelled and eaten away and returned home late in the evening.

Group village head Pensulo, in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kunthembwe, said her people who rushed to the scene failed to put out the fire, leading to the loss of all household property of the Chaponda.

The village head said the family was in dire need of aid and she contacted people around, and by on Wednesday, an opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) aspirant member of Parliament for Blantyre City West Charles Joshi, responded with a cash donation and promised to buy household utensils for the family.
