Female police officers from Lilongwe Police Station have donated items and cheered up mothers in maternity wards at Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe.

The items included laundry soap, plates and cups.

Speaking yesterday after the handover, the group’s representative Superintendent Loveness Mthawanji said they chose to donate to the maternity wards to appreciate motherhood and encourage mothers to take care of their babies.

She said the gesture was also to encourage female police officers to embrace the spirit of giving to underprivileged people such as those in hospitals.

“Besides being police officers, we know what it takes to be in the maternity ward. We mobilised money among ourselves to extend our love to you that everything will be alright,” said Mthawanji.

Chimwemwe Mlenga, a nurse at the two maternity wards, thanked the officers for the gesture, saying patients experience many challenges, including lack of basic needs.

She encouraged the officers to keep up the spirit, saying such visits not only benefit the patients materially, but also lift their spirits which enables them to effectively respond to medication.

Speaking on behalf of other recipients, Nadile Kanyumbu said the gifts came at the right time when they were struggling to find soap for laundry.

The gynaecological and low risk maternity wards at Bwaila District Hospital receive and assist at least 50 to 60 mothers daily.

The donation is part of activities the law enforcers have lined up during this year’s commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.
