Female urban artists miss from UMP list
The list of the 2013 Urban Music Party (UMP) festival headliners is out and glaringly missing from that list are female urban artists.
According to organisers Time Prime Media and Nde’feyo Entertainment three DJs and five urban musicians were identified for the festival scheduled for next weekend.
The musicians list has Piksy, Blakjak, Maskal, Armstrong and Tay Grin while the DJs’ has DJ Cool, DJ Panther and DJ Scarper. The eight triumphed from 36 musicians and 10 DJs that were nominated for the festival by the public through Facebook and Twitter and through SMS voting, UMP identified the headliners.
According to a press release made available to The Nation on Wednesdayevening, the eight accumulated the highest number of votes. The voting also endorsed Third Eye, but he will not be at the party because he is in South Africa.
UMP’s Khumbo Munthali commented that the SMS voting process added excitement and hype to the festival.
“The voting campaign was very successful, in that many people participated, in the process it added the needed excitement. We are thankful to all those who participated and to Airtel Malawi for providing us with the platform to carry out this campaign”, said Munthali.
Meanwhile, UMP has announced that apart from the headliners, UMP will select other artists to perform at the festival.UMP said the artists will be selected from the initial nominations list.
UMP festival event will start with a launch party at Chichi’s Spot in Chinyonga in Blantyre on Friday. The main event will be on Saturday at Blantyre Cultural Centre from 10 am. Then there will be an after-party dubbed an Awardees Night and a festival closing braii at Blue Elephant in the evening, before wrapping it all up on Sunday afternoon at the same venue.
This year’s UMP is being supported by Airtel Money, GOtv (Multichoice), Star Radio and Blantyre Newspapers Limited (BNL).
