Firm gives Kasungu school K10 million worth of cement

Shayona Cement Corporation has donated 250 bags of cement worth about K10 million to Boma Primary School in Kasungu District to help complete stalled development projects, including classroom construction and sanitation facilities.

The donation, made on Tuesday, is expected to ease some of the challenges facing the school, which has about 4 000 learners, but struggles with inadequate toilets, water shortages and limited electricity supply.

The company’s human resources administration manager Austin Mvula said the company was committed to supporting the school, adding that further assistance could be considered if the donated materials were used for their intended purpose.

additional toilets and urinals for boys and support the general maintenance of classrooms,” he said.

Boma Primary School director Janet Kawaye said the donation came at a critical time as the institution faces serious sanitation challenges that threaten the health and safety of learners.

She said the school has 2 808 girls sharing only two washrooms while more than 90 teachers share one toilet.

“We are facing a serious shortage of sanitation facilities at this school. Having 2 808 girls sharing only two washrooms is a major challenge and the situation is putting the health and safety of our learners at risk,” said Kawaye.

While thanking Shayona Cement for the donation, Kasungu district director of education and sports Zimulange Mhango commended teachers for their dedication despite challenges they face in delivering education services
