Fischer’s comedy act

Listen to this article

Back in 2013 when Nyasa Big Bullets veteran midfielder Fischer ‘Anong’a’ Kondowe declared his intention to contest for Blantyre City South Constituency, there was a flurry of excitement among the People’s Team faithful and one of them was my then house help Piyasi.

Piyasi spoke highly of his idol, saying:  “Ndipo referee waku Paliyamenti uja akavale zilimbe chifukwa Jah Man amatha mawutu [I am sure he meant to say speaker].”

But as fate would be, in twists and turns of pure comedy, Fischer did not realise his dream as it transpired that he was not a registered voter and, therefore, not eligible to contest.

Fast forward to 2018, ‘Anong’a’ is back in the limelight to pursue his dream having declared his interest again and last week he was unveiled as Malawi Congress Party (MCP) aspirant by Mohammad Sidik Mia. But in yet another comedy act, barely a day after being introduced as an MCP aspirant, Fischer changed his tune saying he was an independent aspirant.

In a phone interview I had with him a few days ago, Fischer sounding jovial, narrated to me how he had become a political ‘hot cake’ overnight to the extent that all the big parties are scrambling for him to be their candidate and that he would join a party that “would come up with a tempting offer”, perhaps Jah Man thinks politics is like football where players toy around with clubs in search of fortune.

I am certain there could be more surprises coming up and tomorrow we could wake up to the news that he has again changed his mind and will be switching to music by joining Black Missionaries. Uloliwe, uloliwe wayidudula neng’esiza hah! (Oh yes, the train is pushing). Glory be to God.  Uloliwe, uloliwe wayidudula neng’esiza hah! (Oh yes, the train is pushing). Glory be to God. n
