Flames switch focus to World Cup qualifiers

The Flames have switched their focus to their upcoming  2026 World Cup qualifier against Namibia’s Brave Warriors after booting out Comoros 4-0 on aggregate in the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (Chan) qualifying play-offs.

Malawi, who are fourth in Group H of the global showpiece qualifiers with six points from four matches, host the  second-placed Brave Warriors on March 20 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Malawi National Football Team coach Kallisto Pasuwa said in an interview yesterday that the players have since been released to join their respective clubs and will regroup on Thursday to start preparing for the Namibia match.

Namibia have eight points from four matches, two points behind leaders Tunisia while Liberia are third with seven points.

Meanwhile, Namibia coach Collin Benjamin last week named his preliminary 30-man squad for the match, which includes 14-foreign-based players, most of them plying their trade in South Africa.

South Africa-based Mamelodi Sundowns star Peter Shalulile and Deon Hotto of Orlando Pirates are some of the players.

Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Comoros was the second straight win for the Zimbabwean since his appointment as Flames’ permanent coach.

Pasuwa also oversaw the last two 2026 Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifiers against Burundi away, which ended goalless and an impressive 3-0 home win over Burkina Faso as an interim coach.
