Just a Coincidence

Flying over Lake Nyasa

When I travel by air from East Africa, I mean travelling by air not on a broom; I pay particular attention to what comes through from the cockpit on the intercom. On all the occasions I have travelled on these journeys, whether with Ethiopian or Kenyan Airways, the message has been the same.

“We will fly over the city of Dodoma as we make our headway towards Lilongwe. Thereafter, we will exit Tanzanian airspace as we commence our descent over Lake Malawi towards Lilongwe.”

I have been wondering if these announcements were also made before President Jakaya Kikwete last came to Malawi. As far as I can tell, President Kikwete was last here at the late president Bingu wa Mutharika’s funeral. I met him gululu at Sunbird Mount Soche in the company of Minister Sidik Mia, the day we buried Mutharika at Mpumulo wa Bata. May be the captain on Kikwete’s airplane said something like this: “Your Excellency, we fly over Tanzanian Lake Nyasa before we proceed on to Malawian Lake Malawi as we proceed to Blantyre.”

My wife thinks I am pro-PP. Why does she think that way? But do I think I am pro-PP? Of course, not. Do I then think I am anti-PP? Of course, not. I am neither. To be aligned to political parties is a burden I am not ready to carry.

For some time, however, I had been thinking I could vie for councillorship position in my ward. Why not? I have previously written about such a wish on these pages. Until a reader phoned me and asked me whether I was interested to join mainstream party politics. I said no way. I gave him various reasons why I was thinking politics was not for me.

Yes, I knew at my age, Samora Machel was marching into Maputo to become the president of that country. Yes, I thought about Atupele Muluzi who at such a young age wants to be leader of this great nation. By the way, what happened to Chenje Golo being sued for defamation? Was it just hot water or Chenje Golo will pay, eventually?

I do not know how I can give advice to Amai. Last time I was listening to her speech, she seemed to get delighted by the fact that she will soon be chair of Sadc. Nothing bad about that. But her predecessor and nemesis Mutharika was chair of the African Union which was bigger than Sadc. Muluzi was not only chair of Sadc but Comesa as well. So what’s the fuss? One does not have to be good to chair these organisations, unless I am missing something.
