The family of the late dancehall musician Vic Marley, has said recognition of the work their deceased relative did during his music life time by Urban Music Party (UMP) is an honour to the family.

UMP announced late last week that Vic Marley will be recognised as Lifetime Achiever alongside Black Life Entertainment, during the UMP’s main event to be held this weekend, for his contribution to the growth of urban music in the country.

In an interview, brother to the deceased artist Yampido Kunje said the family feels respected.

“We are very pleased with the recognition. Vic Marley contributed a lot to Malawi’s music industry and as a family we are not surprised by the recognition. He really deserves it,” said Kunje

He said the family will treat the award with honour in respect of the fallen artist who was second born in the family of eight.

“We are yet to discuss as a family on how best we should treat the award, but as a family together with his wife and his only child who was born a month after his death, it gives us pride,” said Kunje.

Vic Marley whose real name is Victor Kunje, died on May 24 2005 in a road accident at a time when his music was doing well on the local scene. He made his name with the debut Mau anga and he passed away while working on the single Traffic police.

According to Kunje, Vic Marley’s first step into serious music was in 1998 when he was performing in Family Matters Band, made up of Kunje family members. He later formed Adzukulu band.
