Members of Lodge Angoni in Lilongwe have donated food and other items to the Missionaries of Mary Mediatrix, an all-girls orphanage, in Area 49 in the city.

Apart from food, members of the Lodge Angoni, a Masonic Lodge that falls under the Scottish Constitution of the Grand Lodge of Scotland, also donated blankets and reusable sanitary pads.

Speaking after the donation recently, outgoing right worshipful master of Lodge Angoni, Hament Tanna, said the orphanage deserves the support because both the girls and the sisters who run the institution work hard, particularly in easing the lives of the needy children.

“Kindness, charity and benevolence are always at the core of Freemasonry, which has been in Malawi for more than 100 years,” said Tanna.

Missionaries of Mary Malawi regional superior Sister Mercedes Arbesus thanked the Freemasons for the donation saying it will help improve the girls’ living standards at the orphanage.

“We are always humbled when we receive such support because it shows that even locals appreciate what we are doing. It is not easy looking after teenagers with limited support,” said Arbesus.

The Missionaries of Mary Mediatrix came to Malawi in 1986 at the invitation of Bishop Mathias Chimole, then Bishop of Lilongwe Diocese, and they have an orphanage  at Chezi, along the Salima-Lilongwe Road, which is home to 120 orphans. n
