Gabadinho: It takes a lot of sweat

Former Big Bullets FC gem Gabadinho Mhango has said the gap between the South African PSL and the local top-flight league in terms of class, wealth, prestige and stature is huge.

Gabadinho, who plays for Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit Bloemfontein Celtic, told Weekend Nation on Thursday that the PSL is tough and competitive.

“I found it easier playing in the domestic league, in which I could score with contemptuous ease, but not in South Africa.

“I no longer have that luxury because the PSL is tough and as a player, you need to be on your toes all the time as there is a lot of expectation and competition is stiff,” said Gabadinho who is in the country on holiday.

He admitted that it is not easy to break into the first XI.

“It takes a lot of sweat, commitment and dedication and once you lose focus and fail to impress in a single game then just know that your first-team chances are under threat. Playing in the tough terrain of the PSL has made me stronger and more mature,” he said.

Nevertheless, the 21-year-old forward said he is settling down and has put aside his age controversy that hogged the limelight lately.

“My concentration is now on my professional career. I need to work extra hard so that my contract can be extended,” he said.

He said he has fond memories of the goal he scored in his debut against Moroka Swallows when he stepped off the bench to strike a priceless equaliser to force a 2-2 draw. Gaba has so far scored two league goals. He was also on target when Celtic beat Golden Arrows 3-0 earlier this month.
