Gaba set to leave SA club

South Africa-based Malawian forward Frank Gabadinho Mhango is set to leave Betway Premiership side Marumo Gallants upon the expiry of his contract next month.

The Flames striker said in an interview from his Bloemfontein base yesterday that he is currently weighing offers from other teams.

He was responding to a question on what the future holds for him upon the expiry of his contract.

The 32-year-old striker said: “The season is coming to an end, we have our last game this Saturday.

“There are some offers on the table. A couple of teams have made offers  and very soon,  I will decide and finalise a deal. There are no worries.”

The former FCB Nyasa Bullets, Bloemfontein Celtic, Lomontville Golden Arrows, Bidvest Wits, Orlando Pirates, AmaZulu FC and Moroka Swallows striker recently took Gallants to court over an image rights dispute.

But he could not be drawn to comment on whether that is the reason he is weighing offers from elsewhere.

Mhango was also not in the Gallants squad that faced Chippa United at the weekend, but said his unavailability was not related to the court case.

He said: “Not at all. I was not available because I haven’t fully recovered from the ankle injury I sustained during [the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifier] against Namibia.

“I still experience some pain and it was aggravated when a teammate tackled me from behind during training last week.”

In March this year, Mhango’s agent Mike Makaab warned Gallants that they risked losing out on the player if they did not tie him to a new contract.

Makaab was quoted by South African publication Soccer Laduma as having said he will not wait long for Gallants to act.

He said: “We are looking at other opportunities for him [Mhango] and obviously Marumo Gallants is the club we have got to respect.

“He has a contract with them, but we will not wait too long for Gallants. The club has every opportunity to engage us. They know that we represent Gaba.”

Early this year, Mhango, who was 2019/20 Premier Soccer League joint golden boot winner after tying on 16 goals with Peter Shalulile, told The Nation that he still harbours ambitions to play in Europe before he retires.

But he could not be drawn to comment on whether the offers he has, include European teams.

Mhango is Gallants’ leading scorer with five goals, 11 behind the league’s leading scorer Lucas Ribeiro Costa of Mamelodi Sundowns.
