The Blantyre District Health Office on Thursday opened the Gateway Clinic to ease congestion at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH).

Opening the clinic, Ministry of Health Principal Secretary Chris Kang’ombe said in the absence of a district hospital in Blantyre, QECH is congested.

“QECH has been burdened with treating primary and secondary issues which can be dealt with at a clinic. This has led to patients being treated late,” said Kang’ombe.

The Malawi Gaming Board (MGB) and Colony Club Casino provided K12 million for the clinic, which is expected to treat over 100 patients a day.

MGB chief executive officer Master Maliro and Colony Club general manager Ahmed Moniem said in separate interviews rehabilitating the building housing the clinic, furnishing it and providing medical equipment was part of their corporate social responsibility.

“We chose the health sector to complement government’s efforts to make Malawi a healthier nation. This is an area where there is a great need,” said Maliro.
