Germany commits to provide K140bn aid to Malawi

German has pledged to provide 68.8 million euro (about K140 billion) to support Malawi’s social cash transfer programme and agriculture food systems transformation, among others.

A joint statement released on Wednesday after the Malawi delegation and their German counterparts concluded intergovernmental negotiations in Bonn, Germany, said bilateral negotiations focused on the future cooperation between two the countries to improve people’s living standards.

Apart from the financial support, the statement further said Germany has also reaffirmed its support towards implementation of the Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development plan to transform the country into a lower middle-income economy by 2030.

Secretary to the Treasury Cliff Chiunda, who led the Malawi delegation, is quoted in the statement as having commended the German government for its support and collaboration in social protection, agri-food systems transformation, anti-corruption, good governance and public finance management, among others.

“Germany has once again committed to remain a reliable partner as evidenced by the substantial financial and technical cooperation, especially towards the private sector development,” he said.

Head of the German delegation Birgit Gerhardus, who is also head of Southern Africa Division Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, highlighted the need for continued fiscal and economic reforms to stabilise the economy and a conducive environment for private sector growth.

“Good financial management and anti-corruption measures are also crucial for rivate investments,” she said.
