Govt commends World Vision on development

Mchinji District Directorate of Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources has hailed World Vision Malawi (WVM) for uplifting people’s livelihoods through its programmes in agriculture, education and water and sanitation being implemented in the district.

The directorate’s director Evelyn Chima was speaking on Friday at Mavwere in the district at the end of a one-day zonal stakeholders’ field visit to WVM projects in Likasi.

She said some of the projects being implemented in agriculture such as livestock farming and beekeeping have enhanced food security among farming households.

World Vision has introduced bee-keeping in Mchinji

“Since World Vision started implementing its projects in Likasi, communities’ lives have been uplifted through the goat pass-on programme where farmers have been given goats,” said Chima.

She also cited a water and sanitation programme being implemented by World Vision in the area as important and in line with Mchinji District Council’s development plans of ensuring that people in the area have safe water.

“Through the home schooling programme which World Vision introduced, there is increased bonding between parents and children and this has improved children’s learning,” said Chima.

She also said construction of school blocks has also helped schools to have adequate classrooms for learners.

WVM Mchinji District programmes manager Mereena John said the field visit was organised to enable stakeholders appreciate and monitor the projects.

Alick Tonje said since he joined the Makewana Beekeeping Club, the money they realise from the venture has helped him fend for his family

WVM has trained 16 clubs in beekeeping. It has also procured 720 goats for the goat pass-on programme.
