Minister of Information and Digitisation Moses Kunkuyu has assured Malawians that government is geared to deal with mobile fraud and abuse in the country.

The minister gave the assurances on Friday when he responded to a question from Zomba Central legislator Bester Awali who decried the rising cases of cyber-crime and asked what steps are being taken by government to fight the vice.

In his response, Kunkuyu admitted that there is indeed a rise in mobile money fraud.

He said: “My ministry though Macra [Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority] is trying to empower the consumer with information that enables them not to fall into the trap of fraudsters, and also intensified sensitisation.”

The minister indicated that preventing mobile online fraud and abuse requires coordinated efforts between operators and other players such as banking and security technology providers.

Early this year, Macra director general Daud Suleman said the mobile money subscribers lose about K120 million monthly through fraud.
