Govt promotes 200 more immigration officers
Ministry of Homeland Security has promoted 200 officers at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services from the rank of constable to sergeant.
The promotions come about two months after some officers were promoted from the rank of sergeant to sub-inspectors.
In an interview yesterday, Ministry of Homeland Security Principal Secretary Steven Kayuni said the promotion is one of the measures to improve service delivery in the establishment.
He said there were about 360 constables who attended the interviews.
“It is government’s commitment towards motivation of officers, a turnaround for public service delivery within the department, augmenting a better service to Malawians,” said Kayuni.
In an earlier interview, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences developmental scholar and governance analyst Andrew Kaponya observed that promotions are crucial for any organisation’s success.
In July this year, President Lazarus Chakwera also promoted nine officers in the department to commissioners and deputy commissioners.
Those promoted to commissioners are Vivian Kasambo and McCloud Kalindang’oma, who brought the number of commissioners in the department to three, including Fletcher Nyirenda.
Early August this year, Vice-President Michael Usi visited the Immigration Department headquarters in Blantyre where he learnt that lack of promotions was among issues affecting service delivery.
The department has been under intense pressure to deal with challenges bordering on passport issuance and illegal immigrants.
