Government has released K40 million to the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) to host the African Netball Championship which starts on June 24.

The money is to cater for Queens’ camping, food and accommodation, and transport for the participating teams.

NAM president Rosy Chinunda has thanked government for the timely intervention.

“If it were us footing all the expenses, I do not think we could manage it. The K40 million will also be used to pay players’ training and game bonuses,” she said.

Queens’ preparations have been boosted by a sponsorship from MultiChoice Malawi which has bought uniforms for the team and also donated K3 million to the team.

Despite the breakthrough in sponsorship, the Queens have been dealt a big blow following failure by Australian club Peninsula Waves to release goal-attacker Mwawi Kumwenda.

“This tournament will determine rankings on the African continent that is why we wanted Mwawi to be part of the squad. Her experience could play a big difference. We did not want to take chances, especially with South Africa in form,” said Chinunda.

Mwawi is equally disappointed, but said her hands are tied as she has to fulfil club obligations.

“Much as I would have loved to be part of the squad, it is beyond me as I am under contract here. I wish the Queens success,” said Mwawi from Melbourne this week.

In Mwawi’s absence, the Queens bank their hopes in Blue Eagles Sisters goal-attacker Joyce Mvula, if she impresses in camp.

The Queens regroup on Monday in Blantyre. They failed to do so last week because of the GOtv games scheduled for Lilongwe this weekend.
