‘Guide people on settlements’
Albarakah Charity Trust director of administration and finance Saidi Witness has asked government to design policies to guide people when constructing houses.
He said this on Tuesday when the trust donated relief items worth K37.2 million with support from Petroda Malawi Limited to 600 households affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy staying in camps in Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje District.

“It is important for the government to push forward the deliberate policies to ensure that people are constructing houses where they are supposed to be constructed and that they are cultivating in appropriate places looking at the disasters we have suffered for about three years,” said Witness.
He said the frequency of disastersshow that it is high time government guided people on where to build houses to prevent the loss of lives, property and resources during response.
Said Witness: “However, the trust felt duty-bound to support those affected by the cyclone.
“With support from Petroda Malawi Limited, we have put aside K100 million to be used in supporting the survivors.”
One of the survivors, Ethel Machika, thanked Albarakah Charity Trust for the support.
“I lost everything during the disaster. I thank the trust for giving us food. However, I appeal to other well-wishers to help us with building materials so that we reconstruct our homes,” she said.
