Habitat handover houses to Phalombe displaced families

Habitat for Humanity last week gave eight houses to families in Phalombe, who had been displaced by Cyclone Ana and Gombe earlier in the year.

Nostos Homes funded a project to build prefabricated houses using materials they donated where local artisans assisted with the construction, which was designed to withstand disasters with raised foundations and cement blocks.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Habitat for Humanity national director, Anock Kapira said the pilot project has built strong structures in the community.

He said: “We will go forward to look for additional support from the suppliers of the prefabricated homes so that we can reach out to many communities affected by the heavy rains.

“Our vision is to ensure that everyone has a decent home and we most areas which were badly hit are prone to floods disasters.”

On his part, Department Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA) director for response and recovery Moses Chimphepo many houses were destroyed by heavy rains in the district.

“After the decommissioning of the camps and now were are running a recover program where we have put a plan which we will share with our partners.

“Habitat has been fast to assist the needs of the victims by building disaster resilient houses which can accommodate more family members,” he said.

One of beneficiaries Iness Mario said life was becoming tough without proper shelter.
