Health centre project abandoned in Karonga

Construction of Nyungwe Health Centre in Karonga is one of several development projects that have failed to materialise in the district.

This was disclosed on Friday at Nyungwe in the district where the Karonga Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) held a consultative meeting as one way of promotion of democracy and accountability.

Chairperson of Mwilang’ombe Development Patrick Chunda said the project, which started three years ago with funding from well-wishers, was abandoned after they had roofed the building.

“However, officials from the council came and asked to take over to complete the building,” claimed Chunda.

He alleged that a contractor whom the council hired later absconded.

Chunda said community leaders went to the district council to find out the whereabouts of the contractor, but were told that he could not be traced.

Karonga district commissioner Emmanuel Bambe blamed the stalling of the project on mismanagement.

“There is money to complete the work, but some members [of the council] feel that we should first know what went wrong before completing the project,” said Bambe.
