Health workers join Fun Run

Health workers in the country have added morale to the buildup of this Saturday’s Mother’s Fun Run by rendering their services at Ntchisi District Hospital, this year’s beneficiary.

Over 50 health personnel from the Society of Medical Doctors (SMD), Association of Malawian Midwives (Amami) and the National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives (Nonm) visited the hospital on Saturday where they provided various health services.

SMD president Amos Nyaka said the doctors felt compelled to partner Nation Publications Limited (NPL) in the Mother’s Fun Run realising the importance of safeguarding lives of mothers and children.

He said: “We are doctors and we see what happens in hospitals every day.  We are the ones who should have been in the forefront spearheading this event, but since NPL has led the way, we felt it right to complement the effort.”

On her part, Amami president Ann Phoya said the midwives joined the event to show solidarity and appreciate NPL’s efforts towards improving maternal health in the country.

“Midwives are the ones who work in the maternity day and night and they understand the issues of maternal health so it was just imperative for us to partner NPL and other stakeholders,” she said.

Nonm media and marketing officer Prince Henderson said the organisation saw an opportunity in the event to mobilise trainee nurses and midwives from various institutions to appreciate the sacrifice of established practitioners.

“We have brought trainees from the Malawi College of Health Sciences, Nkhoma Nursing College and Daeyang Luke Nursing College to be part of this event. We consider the Mother’s Fun Run to be a patriotic event,” he said.

Ntchisi district health officer Zondwayo Ng’oma appreciated the services rendered by the group.

“Within a short time, many patients have been assisted, which would not have happened under normal circumstances,” he said.

During the event, the Central Medical Stores Trust (CMST) and Pharmacare supported the group with medical supplies which were used and some were left for future use at the hospital.

The event was one of the pre-activities of NPL’s annual Mother’s Fun Run event taking place this Saturday in the district.
