Idle projects spark concerns in Chitipa
Chitipa Development Trust has raised concerns over completed development projects in Chitipa District that are not operational.
The organisation’s chairperson Austin Mshani expressed these concerns during a press briefing held at Saint Kizito on Saturday.
He cited some projects such as an abattoir and Misuku Girls’ Hostel, which were completed two years ago, but are yet to be commissioned.
“We are worried that our children are walking long distances to school despite the construction of a hostel for their benefit,” said Mshani.
He appealed to the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture to intervene on the council’s delays in handing over completed development projects to communities.
“We aim to unite, develop and improve people’s living standards in the district. However, we face challenges as the council is reluctant to collaborate on our oversight role,” said Mshani.
Chitipa Civil Society Organisations Network chairperson Patrick Ziba commended Chitipa Development Trust for speaking out on the two projects.
Chitipa district director of planning and works Misheck Gondwe said the delay to utilise the abattoir was due to lack of good road.
“We are looking for funding to rehabilitate the road to the facility,” he said.
Regarding the Misuku Girls’ Hostel, Gondwe said the lack of mattresses has delayed its operation.
“The council has pledged to procure the mattresses and undertake essential finishing of the pipe connecting to the septic tank to enhance hygiene at the school,” he said.
Gondwe assured people of Chitipa that both facilities will become operational before the end of the year.
