Nsanje youths set to hone technical skills
Kuchene Women Forum executive director Mary Namalomba says they want to empower 30 youths in Nsanje District with vocational skills.
She said this on Tuesday at Nthole Community-Based Childcare Centre in Traditional Authority (T/A) Malemia in the district when they engaged the applicants.
Said Namalomba: “We have secured K8.9 million support from ActionAid Malawi to train youths from T/As Malemia, Mbenje and Ngabu in the district.
“These are youths we once sponsored their education from primary to secondary schools. We noted that most of them are not productive since they do not have vocational skills to generate an income.”
She said the youths will undergo training in four courses namely, carpentry and joinery, welding and fabrication, cosmetology and tailoring.
Malemia Area Development Committee chairperson Matthias Chilumba thanked the organisation for the initiative and asked those who will be picked to prudently use the opportunity.
“It is good to acquire vocational skills rather than wait for handouts from well-wishers,” he said.
Nsanje district assistant labour officer Maxwell Banda thanked the organisation for complementing government’s efforts to train youths in vocational skills.
Nsanje district trade officer Zuze Matewere said with the vocational skills, the youth can generate income.
“The vocational skills will prevent the youth from migrating to South Africa for greener pastures,” he said.
On his part, Nsanje district gender officer Edison Njembe said the project will eradicate poverty among young women in the district
