Illovo Sugar hands over servers to Must

Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc has handed over computer servers to Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) in Thyolo District to help the institution manage its data.

Speaking during the handover on Monday at Must, the Malawi Stock Exchange-listed sugar manufacturer’s communications and stakeholder relations manager Olive Kawelama said the donation is part of fulfilling its corporate social responsibilities

“The servers will provide necessary data storage for the university to perform some of its functions since information and communications technology is vital to sustainable development and this is our small way of ensuring that the university is able to function effectively and efficiently,” she said.

Kawelama said Must is one of their partners and they believe that technology plays a vital role in the sustainability of an agriculture-run business such as Illovo Malawi.

Must deputy vice-chancellor Jonathan Makuwira thanked Illovo Sugar for the donation, saying it will go a long way in as far as achieving the university’s mandate of providing ICT-related services at the university.

He said: “We are appreciative for what Illovo Sugar has done by providing this donation as you are aware this equipment is so vital in a number of ways such as managing our information.

“It will also help our students to appreciate what ICT is all about and as well to advance the agenda provide skills in ICT.”

Makuwira said one of the challenges they face is lack of ICT equipment.
