During the signing ceremony in January this year, the record label he signed a deal with said of him: “The musician who defines his genre as world music, but one cannot mistake the fact that this music is purely and genuinely Malawian.”

Many have also described Jacko Jana as an artist who represents the revival of classic Malawian music as he brings to life memories of the likes of the great Allan Namoko.

But just six months down the line, the budding acoustic music artist wants out of the deal he signed with Nyimbo Music Company, calling it shoddy.

In an interview with Nation on Sunday during the week, Jana charged that he feels betrayed by his promoters, saying he is not amused with the way Nyimbo has handled his upcoming album launch.

“They are just quiet about the whole deal. It’s been some months now since we penned down the deal and I am yet to hold a show. I was supposed to launch my album last month and it passed without a word from them.

“Everytime I try to talk to them they always say they are still working on the logistics. That begs the question: how do they plan to prepare for the launch with me, the artist, in the dark? It’s frustrating, and I am beginning to smell a rat over the whole deal,” he said.

The 24-year-old is yet to release his much-awaited debut album, Waiting for Somebody.

“As artists, we have goals to achieve. We have personal aspirations and normally, people make it big in the industry at the time when they first burst into fame. I haven’t seen this happening with me,” he said.

But Nyimbo Music Company managing partner Daud Suleman has trashed the claims, saying the artist has to exercise patience in a professional setting.

“Actually, I am hearing [his concerns] from you. But if it’s true, then it’s very unfortunate,” he said.
