JB appoints ACB deputy director

Malawi President Joyce Banda has appointed deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) at the height of her purported zero tolerance for corruption amid continued investigations into the Capital Hill looting.

He is Reyneck Matemba. He was until his appointment the Administrator General, a position he has held for less than a year after being appointed from Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs where he served as assistant chief legislative counsel.

“It’s a big challenge. I know what lies ahead of me. I will definitely need support from stakeholders but I will try my best,” he said in an interview yesterday.

If he passes the scrutiny of the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament, Matemba will become second person to take up that position after Alex Nampota whose contract ended in 2004.

Nampota later came back to head the ACB and was unceremoniously removed by President Banda a few months after she took over office.

Meanwhile, a senior government official confirmed yesterday that President Banda has reshuffled principal secretaries at the height of investigations into the cash-gate.
