JB dates opposition leaders today
Malawi President Joyce Banda is today (Thursday) expected to meet leaders of the country’s opposition political parties at the Kamuzu Palace in the capital, Lilongwe. The meeting, according to government, is aimed at briefing them on a number of issues of national importance. No further details were provided.The President, through Leader of the House Henry Phoya, invited the leaders of the opposition political parties to the meeting scheduled to start at 1.30 pm.
The invitation letter, which The Nation has seen, is dated July 1 2013.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president John Tembo and United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi confirmed in separate interviews receipt of the invitation. The two also confirmed their attendance.
Tembo said he had another meeting in Dedza, but he cancelled it in favour of the meeting with the President.
The letter advised each opposition leader to go with one senior member of their parties.
Reads part of the letter: “The purpose of the meeting is to afford Her Excellency the State President an opportunity to brief leaders of political parties in the country on a number of issues of national importance.”
This is the second meeting by the President with leaders of the opposition, having met them also over the Malawi-Tanzania border issue.
