Jordan club offers Civo defender lucrative deal

Flames and Civo United defender Lawrence Chaziya has signed for Jordanian top-flight league football club Al-Hussein Irbid SC following his impressive performance at the recent Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Cameroon.

Civo United general secretary (GS) Ronald Chiwaula confirmed the development in an interview yesterday, saying the club spotted the player while playing for the Flames at Afcon.

He said the club was happy with the deal and wishes him the best of success as he embarks on his journey as professional player.

Said Chiwaula: “It is true that our defender Lawrence Chaziya has signed a 10-month contract with a Jordanian club, Al Hussein Irbid SC with effect from February 5.

“He was offered $20 000 (about K16.5 million signing- on fee. “He will also going to be one of the best paid players in Malawi with his salary at $4 000 (about K3.3 million) a month, free food, accommodation and transport.”

But he said other details such as his transfer fee will be released later as they are still discussing with the club.

Chiwaula said they were proud of Chaziya’s feat.

“We are happy that we have produced a material who has been offered a lucrative deal. When I briefed FAM director of media and communications Gomezgani Zakazaka he was happy, saying we [Civo] have raised the bar,” he said.

Meanwhile, the 25-year-old is expected to leave for Jordan within 21 days.

However, FAM club licencing and player transfer manager Casper Jangale said they would comment after an official communication from Civo.

“What I can say is that we have heard the news through social media. We will comment once we are informed officially about the deal,” he said.

According to information from the club’s website, Al Hussein Irbid SC is a professional football club based in Irbid, which competes in the Jordanian Pro League.

The club has never won the Jordan League or Jordan FA Cup, but are three-time winners of the Jordan FA Shield and winners of the 2003 Jordan Super Cup. Al-Hussein were beaten finalists in the 2007 Jordan FA Shield.
