General Alliance through Kuyenda Chokhala promotion in partnership with Sustain Green Malawi last week embarked on tree planting exercise by planting 2000 trees at Michiru Forest in Blantyre as one way of sustaining the environment.

General Alliance corporate affairs manager Pamela Mazengera said the tree planting exercise demonstrates one way of giving back to the community.

She said: “It is important for insurance companies that sell motor insurance to give back to the environment as vehicles also contribute to climate change through carbon emissions.

“We are planning to conduct a similar exercise in Lilongwe and Mzuzu in areas where there is also a need for planting trees.”

On her part, Michiru Forest plantation manager Ida Masonga said General Alliance’s commitment to tree planting is a remarkable milestone in efforts of addressing the issue of environmental degradation in the country.

“Deforestation has negatively affected the country due to charcoal production and brick burning to an extent that we have been experiencing floods and drought.

“We have put measures in place to curb this malpractice by involving different stakeholders in planting trees in various areas,”
