K250m community library to promote reading culture

People around Mtanila Primary School in Traditional Authority Chakhaza in Dowa District have expressed excitement with the K250 million modern library established in the area.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday when Opulence Malawi handed over the facility to the community, a community member Esther Jere said the library will promote reading culture among learners and communities in the area.

“I have two children who learn at Mtanila Primary School and they will benefit from the project. If we introduce children early to the culture of reading, they will become knowledgeable,” she said.

Senior Chief Chakhaza commended the initiative, saying learners, who previously spent their time watching videos at Madisi Trading Centre, will now go to the library to read books.

“This infrastructure is critical for advancing quality education in our communities. I urge my subjects to take good care of the library so that it serves generations to come,” he said.

Mtanila Primary School head teacher Felix Siliya thanked the organisation for the facility.

“The library will help our learners access books and resources that align with their studies. The availability of computers and free Internet will also allow them to gain digital skills,” he said.

Opulence Malawi programmes officer Okkifi Dimba emphasised the library’s potential.

“The facility will provide access to books, educational resources, computers and free Internet services, which will enhance learners’ academic performance and literacy skills,” he said.

Dimba said Opulence Malawi will manage the library for the first five years, where they will train local community members on library management before handing it over to them.

The organisation implemented the project with funding from The Church of the Resurrection in America.
