K607m water project to improve sanitation
Water Mission Malawi has commissioned a K607 million Golomoti Safe Water Project in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kachindamoto in Dedza District to enhance access to safe water.
Speaking on Tuesday during the project’s handover, Water Mission Malawi country director Nixon Sinyiza said they are working with the district council to ensure they provide safe water to communities.
He also said they will monitor the water system to ensure its safety.
“We are excited to provide safe water to communities in T/A Kachindamoto. We have installed 21 taps and six solar-powered tanks,” said Sinyiza.
Dedza District Council chairperson Stanley Manase commended Water Mission Malawi for the project, saying the people have been using unsafe water for a long time.
“We believe the initiative will promote hygiene and sanitation in the area,” he said.
A community member, Gloria Sikelo, said women were walking long distances to get safe water for drinking and other domestic purposes.
“We will now use the time we spent searching for water doing other activities,” she said.
Speaking on behalf of Senior Chief Kachindamoto, group village head Chikololere asked people to take care of the facilities.
“We do not want to hear stories that some materials have been stolen,” he said.
The water system targets 23 000 people in the area.
Water Mission Malawi implemented the project with funding from McKinnon Family.
