K29.6m police unit to enhance security
People in Traditional Authority (T/A) Phambala and Sub-T/A Tsikulamowa in Ntcheu District have expressed excitement with the construction of Ntonda Police Unit.
Phambala Area Development Committee vice-chairperson Lawrence Bamusi in an interview on Tuesday said the presence of police officers will restore law and order in the area.
He said: “There was security lapse in the area and communities were taking the law into their own hands.
“Despite having community policing forums, mob justice was rampant.”
Bamusi also said community members were walking long distances to Senzani Police Unit or Balaka Police Station for services.
On her part, group village head Bayani said theft of livestock and crops as well as house break-ins were rampant in the absence of a police unit.
“I will advise community policing forums to work with police to combat crime. We will also ensure a cordial relationship between communities and the police,” she said.
The chief warned her subjects against vandalism whenever there are differences with police officers.
Ntcheu Police Station spokesperson Jacob Khembo agreed with the communities’ sentiments on security lapse.
“However, the police formation will be on high alert for any possible security threat to ensure communities live without theft disturbances,” he said.
Ntcheu District Council director of planning and development Obed Mwalughali said the facility is key to development; hence, making the project a priority.
He said the council has spent K29.6 million from the District Development Fund to construct the facility.
