‘K47m school block to reduce congestion’

Salima district commissioner Grace Chirwa Kanyimbiri says the council will construct a K47 million school block at Thundu Junior Primary School to upgrade it to a full primary school.

She said this on Saturday when the district council launched the project in  Senior Chief Maganga in the district.

Kanyimbiri said currently, learners go to Salima Primary School from Standard Six to complete their primary education.

She said: “Making Thundu a full primary school will reduce congestion at Salima Primary School as it is the nearest school where learners from Thundu go to complete their primary education.

“Thundu was opened to address congestion at Salima Primary School, but the problem was half-solved as Thundu only offers classes up to Standard Five.”

Salima district complementary basic education coordinator Lackwell Ngongonda said the project will help children access education within reach.

Senior Chief Maganga urged his subjects to take care of construction materials.

“Please, do not steal or vandalise the construction materials because the school will benefit your children,” he said.

Salima Central legislator Gerald Kapiseni Phiri (Malawi Congress Party) asked the community to take part in the project.

“Where necessary, the community can help with the ground work such as making a drainage system and ensure timely completion of the project,” he said.

The District Development Fund-financed project will compromise a head teacher’s office, staffroom, two classrooms and two pit latrines.

The project is set to be completed within 90 days.
