After a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the annual Maseko Ngoni cultural ceremony Umhlangano wa Maseko is back.

In an interview, Maseko Ngoni Heritage chairperson  Inkosi Makwangwala said the event will this year take place for three days from September 1 to 3 at their headquarters in Lizulu.

“We need about K74 million for the event to be a success and we are appealing to the public to contribute,” he said.

Inkosi Makwangwala said the event will also act as a celebration marking 10 years of Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani’s reign.

“We are happy that our leader, His Majesty Ngwenyama Gomani V, has clocked 10 years on the throne. We celebrate his leadership,” he said.

The traditional leader said they are planning the event in such a way that people from all walks of life will have a great time and appreciate the Maseko Ngoni culture.

“We have invited people from all walks of life within Malawi and beyond. We are deep into our preparations and we want as many people as possible to come,” said Inkosi Makwangwala.

Reacting to the announcement, one of the Maseko Ngoni subjects from Ntcheu, Laison Mabena, said it is great to finally have the cultural festival back.

“Last year some of our colleagues held their events, but we didn’t. We are happy to have the event happy and celebrate our culture in unity,” he said.

The Umhangano wa Maseko cultural event was founded by Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani V to promote, celebrate and appreciate the Maseko Ngoni culture.
