Kabambe says Chakwera oblivious to deterioration
UTM Party president Dalitso Kabambe has accused President Lazarus Chakwera of being oblivious to the deteriorating state of affairs driving more and more Malawians into poverty.
Speaking to the media at UTM Party headquarters in Lilongwe yesterday, the former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) governor said instead of seeking aid to address the fertiliser and food crises, the President should have dismissed key officials responsible for foreign exchange and fertiliser issues.
Reacting to Chakwera’s national address made on Wednesday evening, he said the President should address fiscal, monetary and exchange rate policies to secure forex for essential imports instead of perpetually extending a begging bowl.
Kabambe, an economist, said: “The President should have initiated serious investments in key forex-generating sectors and revitalised Admarc to support farmers with inputs and market access.”
He also criticised the government’s approach to fuel importation, arguing that it contradicts basic economic principles and that “Chakweranomics has never worked in this country”. In a phone interview, People’s Development Party president Kondwani Nankhumwa described the speech as empty and lacking hope for the future.
