Karonga Hospital appeals for food, beddings

Karonga District Hospital paediatric ward in-charge Joseph Kamwela has appealed to well-wishers to support the ward with beddings, food and other necessities.

He made the appeal on Tuesday when Karonga Prison female officers and wives of wardens donated assorted food items to the ward.

“The donation has come at the right time because the ward does not have a number of basic things such as beddings, food and medical supplies,” said Kamwela.

He, however, thanked the group for reaching out to the children’s ward with food items.

A guardian, Enala Sinyangwe, said she was happy with the food parcel she received.

She said they had not received any food, since her daughter was admitted to the hospital.

“May God bless these women for this kind gesture. Since we don’t receive food here, life is hard,” said Sinyangwe.

In an interview, Karonga district director of health and social services David Sibale said the hospital is providing one meal a day but they are working towards providing two meals.

He said: “Previously, we were offering two meals per day. This was scaled down after prices of foodstuffs went up.

“Again, we are servicing old debts and once we settle them, we will start offering two meals a day.”

On her part, Karonga Prison officer in-charge Emily Banda said the gesture was part of celebrating the country’s 59th Independence Anniversary.
