Kathumba, Nazombe shine in Mountain Bike Challenge

Misse Kathumba and Steve Nazombe from Blantyre Cycling Club won this year’s 55-kilometre (km) Winter Series Mountain Bike Challenge at Zomba Mountain on Saturday.

The race was sponsored by HTD Limited to raise funds for preserving the environment and giving back to communities.

Kathumba and his team-mate Nazombe completed the 55km race in 1:55:30 hours beating the runner-up, Kwame Kaira, by three minutes.

At the end of the season, Kathumba won the overall Men’s Long Route beating Erick Kandoje and Nazombe who came second and third, respectively.

“It feels good to be the champion. It was not easy, but I had good preparations which have helped me to win,” said Kathumba.

In the women’s long route category, only two took part—Debbie Shomberg and Maggie O’ Toole—who came first and second, respectively.

HTD Limited national services manager Nathan Thomas assured the organisers that they will continue supporting the race.

Said Thomas: “It  has been a great success. We had a lot of cyclists who participated in this season challenge and this gives us encouragement to support the next season,”

Organising chairperson Paul Kennedy said they were satisfied with the overall turnout.

“We are interested to see more youngsters taking part,” he said.

A total of 71 cyclists took part in the event. n
