Kawonga wanted at Maritzburg United

South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Maritzburg United has said it wants Chawanangwa Kawonga to join them as soon as possible.

The club’s operations manager Quintin Jetto was responding to a question on whether they have given up their intention to sign the player.

Kawonga attended successful trials in Pietermaritzburg during off-season and Silver came up with an offer of K8 million which came down to K6 million following negotiations between the two clubs.

But since, then there has been no progress on the deal.

However, Jetto cleared the air yesterday, saying they informed Silver that they wanted the player to travel to South Africa this weekend so that they could finalise his contract and then start processing his work permit.

“We have not given up. We still want the boy from Malawi. He is a fantastic player and we are expecting him,” said Jetto in a telephone interview from South Africa.

But it would appear that Silver are reluctant to release him this week so that he can feature in tomorrow’sStandard Bank Knockout Cup semi-final match against Mighty Wanderers.

Silver chairperson McDonald Mafuta-Mwale confirmed that the South African club wanted the Under-20 national soccer team trumpcard to travel this week.

He is also hopeful that Under-20 national team will release the player “as he is only going there to finalise contractual issues and could take just a day or two. After all, he will have to come back here anyway as per work permit application requirement.”
