The 45 000 capacity Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe was filled with music lovers who turned up to witness Kell Kay’s 10th anniversary in music celebration on Sunday.

Since the gig was announced, the expectations among music lovers were high. But come the day, a small hurdle caused by the delay in starting the event threatened what ended up to be a moment to remember for the Afro-pop singer and everyone who came.

The event’s programme indicated that the show would start at 11am, but things only rolled into gear around 9pm.

The Loss hitmaker led the BNS arena into a remarkable concert which confirmed his influence as one of the country’s urban music heavyweights.

The impressive youthful audience proved that it is the backbone of the music industry as far as their support is concerned. They thronged the vast venue in large numbers and enthusiastically supported all artists on the list.

From the word go, it was clear that visiting female artists Nadia Nakai from South Africa and Ayar Starr from Nigeria were on a mission to make a strong impression.

Scantly-dressed, Nadia Nakai set the ball rolling before Ayar Starr. As they sung and danced on stage, the excited fans screamed with their hands and phones in the air to capture their photos.

Malawian artists refused to be outshined as both rising and legendary music stars such as Lucius Banda, Wendy Harawa, Gwamba, Hyphen and Charisma delivered incredible sets which added a sparkle to Kell Kay’s celebration.

Most local stars calculated the timing of the concert by dishing out hits that attracted deafening echoes from the audience.

Charisma performed his popular hit Kubanda-Kubanda, much to the excitement of the fans. Hyphen jumped on stage with Mkatimo, which drove the audience crazy.

Indeed, it was a night of celebrating Kell Kay’s towering music career. After all, he proved that he is still standing tall after 10 years and the future looks bright.

Judging from his music journey and performance on Sunday night, Kell Kay gallantly demonstrated that he is an iconic singer.

During his set, Kell Kay performed some of the hit songs that have made him a darling. He was joined by Hyphen and Eli Njuchi for their 2023 hit Loss, leading fans into a craze.

The stage was massively mounted with some powerful sound system and glittering lights and smoke to match international standards.

However, some fans expressed disappointment for being blocked from the show area.

“When I paid at the gate, I thought I would enjoy a close experience of the show. But I ended up being placed at the stands like a football fan. I didn’t like this treatment because I wanted to have fun around the stage,” said Chrispin Beza, a fan from Area 47 in Lilongwe.

On his part, Kell Kay thanked his supporters for turning up for the celebration.

“Most importantly, I thank my fans for always being there for me and for creating the big brand that is Kell Kay today. I owe it to their unwavering support,” he said.
