After exactly four years, Afro-jazz singer and composer Lawi is set to renew his affections with Blantyre fans.

The Blantyre comeback is also for a good cause as the Thelele creator will star in a fund-raising concert for a local organisation Medic To Medic scheduled for Sunday at Sunbird Mount Soche.

Lawi: I am delighted to join this cause

In an interview, the artist said he is always compelled to assist where there is need.

“I am delighted to join this cause to make a contribution towards enabling our medical students to find their way into the classroom rather than to stay home for failure to afford and paying tuition fee,” he said.

The guitar maestro said Blantyre fans should expect a special treat as he will be supported by his Mango Band with whom he has undergone intensive rehearsals for the past three weeks.

“It has been very long time since we did a concert in Blantyre. It really feels great to come and rock the city with the support of a full band,” he said.

The concert has been designed to help raise funds for needy medical students, who are under the Medic To Medic initiative. The students are also supported with subsistence allowance, laptops and medical equipment packs.

Medic to Medic project volunteer Tamsin Lillie said they target to raise K2 million from the concert to cater for 96 students under their support countrywide. She said the coming of Lawi gives them hope that they will hit the target.

“He is very crucial to our concert being a success. It is a wonderful opportunity to be working with Lawi. We hope that this is the start of a long-term collaboration. This is our first concert with him and anything surplus is welcome,” Lillie said.

She said the need for help is huge, indicating that they receive almost five requests daily from the colleges they partner with. Malawi College of Health Sciences is said to be the most vulnerable.
