Lawi seeks new growth
Music composer and singer Lawi has been known for his knack to serenade folktales into wonderful pieces of music.
He has demonstrated such ability in his compositions such as Whistling Song, Fesa M’mela and Therere among other compositions. He has developed a niche in narrating folktales and it appears he is not done yet as he has deployed the same masterly in his latest single Phukira.
The single was released on Saturday and it is the third from the South African-based Malawian artist after Galimoto and Gitala Lokha this year. His fans are still anticipating his announced fourth studio album Thirties.
Phukira, phukira mwana wanga. Uli ngati mbewu mu nyengo ya mvula. Kamdothi iwe, yamba kumera. Ona mwanja mwa dzinje ayamba kumera, monga mulenga lenga talika. Momwe dzuwa lawala, talika. Kamdothi iwe yamba kumela, zika mizu nuphukire iwe…goes the song in part.
In the song, Lawi has once again displayed a deep understanding of the Malawian folktales and the pride that he associates with one of the core elements of the Malawian culture. He tried to evoke the typical local set-up with his use of rarely used Chichewa words and phrases throughout the song.
His guitar, both on the lead and bass, was eminent throughout to put emphasis to his afro-jazz beat, which as usual, has been presented in his laid back mode.
According to the artist, the song pays homage to the popular Malawian folktale of Kamdothi which means something from the ground. He said the song is a calling to our inner-child that is uninhibited and lives out its true desires.
He said: “The story ends in a tragedy and leaves the listener forewarned, wishing for a better end.
“This song is re-awakening that hope, which is within us. It gives light to the hope contained in the tragedy. It encourages one to germinate and bring fourth the fruit.”
The Amaona Kuchedwa creator said the song offers hope of the potential that lies in every individual to develop themselves and achieve greatness just like a seed does when it is planted. The song, produced by Lawi himself at his Lawi Music Garage studios, was released together with its video which was produced by HD Creations directed by Sukez.
