Likoma chairperson calls for unity to develop island
Likoma District Council new chairperson Justina Phiri has called for unity between the secretariat and elected leaders to successfully implement projects to develop the island.
She said this in her acceptance speech after being elected chairperson on Tuesday.
“We all want development and it is important that we work together to develop the district,” said Phiri.

She stressed the need for cooperation between leaders and community members, urging dialogue whenever challenges arise.
“Without the people, we are nothing. Let us work together and if things are not going on well, let us speak to one another and move forward together,” said Phiri.
On his part, Likoma district commissioner Abubakar Nkhoma said the council was pleased to have new leadership in place.
“Between July and now, we did not have a full council because the previous cohort’s mandate had ended. With the new leadership in place, we expect pending business to be concluded,” he said.
Nkhoma commended the councillors for their choice, saying Phiri’s election demonstrates recognition of women’s leadership in the district.
Nkhoma encouraged Phiri to work closely with council structures to ensure effective coordination and successful implementation of development initiatives in the district.
Phiri, who is a Democratic Progressive Party councillor for Chizumulu North Ward, will be deputised by Likoma South Ward councillor Ernest Gulu (independent).
Phiri is the first woman to be elected both as a councillor and council chairperson since the establishment of Likoma District Council in 1998
