Lilongwe community refurbishes police unit

Community members in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalumbu in Lilongwe District and Master Stone Breakers Company have handed over a new office block for the officer in-charge and refurbished the police unit to the tune of K5 million.

Speaking when he received the offices on Monday, Lilongwe Police station officer Gift Chiundira thanked the community and the company for the gesture.

He pledged that officers will take good care of the facility.

Chiundira asked community members to also tip off the law enforcers about criminal activities in their area.

“We value working with community members. However, you have also other vital roles rather than just building the structures but informing the police about security lapses,” he said.

Master Stone Breakers Company finance and sales manager Mahmoud Wazneh said they partnered people to refurbish the facility as part of their corporate social responsibility.

“We supported the communities to refurbish the facility because we appreciate the services police render to people,” he said.

Wazneh has since pledged that they will provide new office furniture and stationery to the facility.

In his remarks, T/A Kalumbu assured the police that having contributed towards the construction and refurbishing of the offices, the community will protect the facility from vandalism.

“The facility belongs to the people of this area. These police officers are here to serve us. So, it is our responsibility to look after these law enforcers and the facility,” he said.

Also present at the function were Chitsime Ward councillor Amos Mbewe, traditional leaders and businesspeople.

Chitsime Police Unit is located along the M1, a few kilometres from Six Miles Roundabout and it serves communities from T/A Kalumbu, part of T/As Tsabango, Malili and Chadza.
