Lilongwe Mayor for clean, green city
Lilongwe City Mayor Esther Sagawa has called for collaboration among stakeholders to achieve the capital city’s ‘clean and green city’ initiative.
She said this in Lilongwe on Friday night when she hosted a cocktail to bring various stakeholders on board the council’s plans and initiatives for the city.
The mayor shared the city’s strategic plan, which includes improved security, waste management and planting trees and grass within the city.
“We are expecting stakeholders to join hands with the city council for us to achieve our strategic plan,” said Sagawa.
One of the patrons, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) head of universal service fund Ronald Tembo hailed the council’s plan, but said there was need to embrace digital transformation and put it at the centre of its operations.
He said: “The council can digitise revenue collection, parking and even lighting.
“It is critical that the city embraces technology if we are to move into industrial revolution.”
Tembo said to inspire people to embrace technological development, Macra is, on pilot basis, providing free WiFi in various locations in the city.
“We have put Internet hotspots in the country in places such as Wakawaka, Mtandire, Mtsiriza and Area 23. The Internet connection covers a radius of 100 metrrs,” he said.
On his part, Q Malewezi, a poet who is also Presidential Adviser on Arts, said it was high time the council started thinking about erecting infrastructure that seeks to provide residents with an opportunity to appreciate and showcase arts
