Maba seeks K10mfor national tourney

Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) is seeking K10 million to hold national boxing championship ahead of Zone VI Games and Olympic qualifiers.

The Zone VI Games will be held in Mozambique in July while the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers take place in Ghana in August.

In an interview on Saturday, Maba president Pyson Likagwa said they need the national championship to scout for boxers.

He said: “We need to have a national championship where boxing clubs can send their best boxers to compete. That way we can get the best to represent the nation. We need K10 million for the national championship. We need companies to come in to complement what Malawi National Sports Council will give us.”

In a related development, the women handball national team will be flying to South Africa next week for the African Zone IV handball competition.

Handball Association of Malawi general secretary Dennis Kumwenda confirmed in an interview yesterday, : “We have a crucial competition which will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa starting on 21 May. We have already assembled a good team to represent us there.”
