Mabedi wants more time with players

Flames coach Patrick Mabedi has said he needs more time for camp training considering “the low standards” of football in the country.

He said this during a post-match press conference after the third-place play-off against Zambia’s Chipolopolo at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Mabedi: It will help us

Said the coach: “We have to appreciate that our league [here] in Malawi is different from other countries where the tempo is higher and they have quality players.

“As for us, we still need to be teaching them some things. If we could be doing that, it would really help us.

“So, we need to be with players for five, six, seven days or even more as there are also other aspects that we have to work on such as diet and level of fitness”

But Football Association of Malawi competitions and communications director Gomezgani Zakazaka said having more time with players would depend on the alignment of the football calendar.

He said: “Players are only released during Fifa international dates, otherwise clubs are not obliged to release them. If they do, it is out of goodwill. “So, it has to be a win-win situation.”.
