Making good use of Mudi, Naperi rivers

Listen to this article

Female_irrigation_farmerMudi and Naperi rivers in Blantyre are very filthy. So many efforts have taken place to clean it so that it can be environmentally friendly and that people can safely use its waters. But sadly to no any success. However, people of Letseni Village Traditional Authority (T/A) Somba in Blantyre living down the river have turned out fortunes from the two Blantyre’s most polluted rivers. Letseni Village lies at a place where these two rivers meet. The area is so dry that one hardly sees a borehole when walking in the village. But people from Letseni and surrounding villages are doing wonderful irrigation farming by diverting some of the waters from the rivers into their maize fields as such they plant and harvest the staple food three times a year. In the picture, one of the farmers, Flora Davie inspects her maize field. —Govati Nyirenda, Mana.
