Malawi to host Sadc committee meeting on transport
Malawi will from today host a three-day meeting of ministers responsible for Transport and Meteorology in the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
Briefing the press in Lilongwe on Friday, Transport and Public Works Minister Jappie Mhango said the meeting will tackle a number of issues, including development and implementation of harmonised policy and regulatory frameworks as well as programmes and projects that are of regional importance in the two sectors.
“The meeting will evaluate measures and initiatives that were put in place to expedite regional integration and promote economic growth and development,” he said.
Mhango said there are many issues affecting Malawi’s transport sector such as the safety of the country’s aviation sector, harmonisation of transport sector regulations and acceleration of the implementation of projects under the Beira and North South Corridor.
Malawi has received support from Sadc for the construction of the Lilongwe West Bypass Road, Liwonde Mangochi Road and Nsipe-Chingeni under Nacala Corridor Project and two One Stop Border posts, again under Nacala Corridor project. n
