President Lazarus Chakwera has shown commitment towards uplifting the country’s arts sector as he believes it is one of the engines for economic growth.

Speaking during the State of the Nation Address (sona) which also marked the opening of the 2022/23 budget session of Parliament, Chakwera lauded Malawi as home of fine music which has potential to create employment.

He cited musicians such as Giddes Chalamanda, Faith Mussa, the late Wambali Mkandawire and Patience Namadingo as creams of Malawian aunthentic

sounds.

“For ours is no ordinary nation. Ours is home of fine sounds of Giddes Chalamanda, Wambali, Faith Mussa and Namadingo,” said President Chakwera in his address.

This is not the first time Chakwera has showed interest in developing the country’s arts sector. Last week he hosted veteran musician Giddes Chalamanda at the State House where they also discussed a number of issues pertaining to arts development.

He also honoured Chalamanda, 92, as one of the country’s greatest musicians. Chakwera’s gesture came at a time when there is a public outcry calling for the honouring of legends in various disciplines, including arts and culture sector.

During his meeting with Chalamanda, Chakwera said his government is committed to uplifting the arts and culture sector.

Commenting on the President’s speech, Tourism, Culture and Wildlife Minister Dr. Michael Usi said Chakwera is passionate about arts.

“The President has demonstrated that he appreciates everything about arts and culture. As a ministry, we are ready to support his vision and take the arts sector where he wants it to be,” said Usi.

Presidential Advisor on Arts Lucius Banda also praised Chakwera’s remarks, adding that arts and culture is finally being recognised in high tables.

“We salute the President for picking an interest in arts. This is what we have been lacking for a long time. We need leaders like Chakwera who are passionate to drive progress in the arts sector,” said Banda.

Youth and Sports Minister Richard Chimwendo said arts is an important aspect in development as it plays a significant role in youth development. He has since urged the youth in the country to embrace their talents.
