The Malawi Schools Boys yesterday lost 3-0 to South Africa in the CAF Schools Championship qualifiers at Gateway High School in Harare,  Zimbabwe.

They lost on post-match penalties to South Africa after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Malawi led in the 19th minute through Okestar Kanyenda who connected a Menson Mwakapenda cross.

But South Africa equalised six minutes later through Rhys who pounced on a rebound after a Jordan Hope’s shot hit the post.   After gruelling 90 minutes, the game had to be decided through penalties and Malawi missed all of them.

According to Football Association of Malawi, Malawi High Commissioner to Zimbabwe His Excellency Dr Mwayiwawo Polepole was present to cheer the youngsters.

Malawi Schools Girls football team also failed to play for the bronze medal match.

Earlier, Council of Southern Africa Football Associations indicated that Malawi girls’ team will battle for bronze on better goal aggregate in all group matches following a tie on eight points with Mozambique.

The Malawi girls’ side thought they had qualified for the final on better goal difference with Botswana only to learn later that it was Botswana that made the grade because they used a rule that considered the greatest number of goals scored among the teams that were tied on points.
